Halloween

HALLOWEEN

Halloween falls on a Tuesday this school year.  Yippee!  We will not be having a Halloween parade.  Celebrations are the teacher discretion.  Please check with your child’s teacher for details regarding Halloween celebrations.   The 31st is a full day of school.  As we would like to provide the least amount of distraction to our educational settings there are guidelines to costumes. Students may wear costumes to school on this day.

Guidelines:

Costumes must be modest and not compromise safety standards

  • Skirts, dresses or shorts must be no shorter than 3” above the knee.
  • Shoulders and midriff must remain covered.
  • Bottoms must be worn high enough on waist that underwear or skin is not exposed.
  • No clothing that displays obscene, vulgar, lewd, or sexually explicit words, messages or pictures.
  • No clothing that displays or promotes alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.

Costumes have many components to them.  Your child may not be able to wear his/her entire costume to school.  Please understand. Please NO:  masks, blood, gore, weapons or items that resemble weapons.  Please keep face paint to a minimum as is dries out and becomes uncomfortable through out the day.   Hair coloring is acceptable.  Hats and headgear will be allowed as along as they do not distract the learning environment.    Teachers may ask a student to remove hats or headgear.

Warm regards,

Janice Newton – Principal

Home-Reading & Field Trip Permission Slip

Hello,

I just want to let you all know that today, I have placed either a red or yellow folder in your child’s backpack (red folder for my morning class and yellow for my afterno

on class).  Inside the folder, please find a fieldtrip permission slip and a take-home reading book.  Please sign the permission slip if you so agree, and if you are able, please feel free to donate $5 to the front office to help us pay for our bus and our admission fee.

Also, regarding your child’s reading book, it is absolutely essential to start practicing the letter sounds in the beginning and the word practice sections before reading the

story.  Please practice this with your child so we can all be well prepared during class.  When reading the story, read out the questions on the bottom of each page and have your child answer them.  This is important because it helps your child with their comprehension.  Also, date and sign your child’s Reading Log that is included in the folder.  Please have your child bring his/her folder to school each day.  Currently, we do not have any homework, but it will begin next Monday, September 18th.

Thank you all for your support and help!

1st Week Update

Hello Parents,

I want to thank you all for a wonderful first week of school! After meeting with all of my special new students this week, I know that this will be a great school year. I know that the end of summer may be difficult for some, but it is for us the beginning of a wonderful and fun time together!
So far, I have had the privilege of initially evaluating each new student. Please ensure that you all give each little one a wonderful breakfast, and that each child goes to bed early. First grade is indeed a change of pace for them, so we do need to make sure that we all work together to make this a very productive year.
Our first week, we began going through classroom strategies and assessments. I am so proud of each one of my new students, as they are very carefully following the rules and listening well. For our second week, we are going to refine the rules and perform a few more assessments to help us move forward.
Regarding homework, we will not have any for the next couple of weeks (nor any reading assignments). I feel that we are working hard enough in class for right now, and that it is important to ease in to the pressures of school! Let your little ones go outside and enjoy the warm weather while they still can!
Regarding supplies, there are a few students who have not yet obtained all of their supplies – it is very important that we have all of the supplies before the end of this week.
Also, we had the opportunity to play a few fun games this first week. We played with Legos, Frontier Logs, wooden train sets, Jenga, magformers, and a few other educational games. We certainly want to have some fun in addition to learning this year, so if you have any of these games laying around your home that you are not using, please donate them to our class. For convenience, I will put pictures of these games on my blog. We will be regularly communicating through my blog during the school year so please bookmark our classroom blog.
Thank you again for all of your support. It will be a great year!
