Happy Monday!!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are ready for the week! We started Clusters last Friday and “Oh boy, what a bunch of craziness!” Fridays are short and different anyway, but add on the Clusters, it is a huge change!! I hope the kiddos had such a great time!!

Our Week At A Glance:

***We are still in need of shoeboxes so if you have any just lying around please send them in!! Thank you!!

***I have sent home a School Picture form.  We will be taking pictures on Monday the 25th.

Math: We are still working on Module 1.  This week checking for better understanding and answering any questions that may have come up in the past week.  As a whole grade we decided that an additional week on these skills would benefit everyone.  The kiddos agreed!! 🙂 We will be testing on this Module on Thursday.  I am in the process of updating the Math tab on all of the information that we are covering in each module.

Language Arts: We finally finished the ZanerBloser testing last week and we will be working on DIBELS. Grammar: Learning about Nouns, person, place, things and animals.  Spelling: New words are posted under Words Their Way.  I showed kiddos how to access their lists via the blog so they should be able to navigate themselves around and find what group they need. Writing: We will be writing All About Me this week.  They will be describing themselves and then illustrating their stories. We are working on using complete sentences and being able to pick out the incomplete sentences from our work.

Social Studies: We will continue our discussion on Good Citizenship throughout the week.

The new Choice Menus went home today. ChoiceMenuWeek3 I kept some activities the same as we are continually learning on those tasks.  Please be sure to send in signed tickets with your kiddos so they can be put into a drawing.  Please also remember to record reading minutes on the log so that they get credit for that, we check them daily and minutes are recorded for class and individual minutes as well.  If your kiddo has misplaced their reading log, I can get them a new one, I just need to know they are needing a new one! Here is the link as well Reading Log SepOct2017

Volunteer Schedule: I know you are all just waiting so patiently for the volunteer schedule to come out.  As of right now I have most spots needed filled right now and once all of the testing and grouping is finalized I won’t have anything more to do at this time. I apologize in advance for the headache.

I hope you all have a great week!

Happy Monday Night!!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are ready for the week! I am excited for cooler weather and some rain for sure!! I told the kiddos this morning that my hometown in Montana is struggling with a fire close by and they finally have some rain and snow in the forecast, which will be such a blessing for my home state.

Our Week At A Glance:

***Please remember we are in need of some shoe boxes this week for our SEM day on Friday.  Kiddos will be using them to create with Mrs. Ketcham.  We are still taking old newspapers and Playdough as well. But our kiddos are using the boxes this week!! Thank you to everyone who sent items in last week and continue to do so, we appreciate it so much!***

Happy Labor Day!!!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are all rested up for the rest of our week! We had a pretty amazing week last week and I look forward to what this week brings for us!

Our Week At A Glance:   Newsletter Sept

Math: We will continue working through our Module 1, finishing up on Friday.  We are studying how to find sums and differences between 100.  We will also be taking our beginning of the year benchmark test this week as well.

Language Arts: I will be benchmarking the kiddos for their reading level placements. Spelling: We will begin spelling this week and kiddos will be learning how to cut, sort and record their words for 2nd grade.  I will also have the lists posted under the Words Their Way tab for any practice that kiddos would like to do at home as well. Writing: We will continue working on complete and incomplete sentences, also capitalizing the beginning and having correct punctuation.

Social Studies: Beginning our Citizenship unit this week!

2nd Grade Choice Menu(Homework): Students will be getting a reading calendar this week, 20 minutes every school night is the minimum expectation. Please initial and record how many minutes were read each night. Reading Log SepOct2017 Rather than homework, 2nd grade has opted to use a choice menu, this will be sent home this week, but will be found on the blog after this week. Once your kiddo has completed an assignment, please fill in the ticket tab at the bottom of the page and return to school the following Monday. ChoiceMenuWeek1

Specials Rotations: 12:00-12:40 – Monday – PE – Tuesday – Computers – Wednesday – Library(books brought back weekly) – Thursday – Music and PE (2:00-2:40)

Black Folders and Dockets: Black folders are your kiddos way of getting their papers to and from school to home, it needs to come into the classroom each morning so that the kiddos can fill it with important items from class to be brought home. The dockets are to be kept in their backpacks for other things that may need to be brought home.

Friday Journals~ Friday journals will also go home with your students in their dockets on Fridays. This is a journal where they will be writing to someone in the home about their amazing week. Please take some time over the weekends to write back to them. This is a great way for them to practice their writing skills but to also be able to communicate what is going on at school. I know that my class is really excited to hear from you each week! Thank you for your help and support on this.

Tutoring~ Tutoring starts this week! Math and Reading will be offered Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 – 4:00. We have decided to run tutoring a little different this year as the second grade teachers will be working with any second graders that may need additional help. Mrs. Ketcham will be doing Math in my classroom 111 and I will be doing Reading in room 113. Please let me know if you would like your kiddo to stay after school on these days to get additional support and what area(s) you’d like them to stay for. This will be a great benefit for our students, since we know what they’ll be working on during school and will know where we can give additional support.

SEM~ This month’s expression is Artistic. On Fridays in 2nd Grade, we will be rotating between classes and doing different activities on the monthly expression. This will allow for students to be able to gain a greater understanding of the different expressions and become familiar with how they best like to express themselves. This month we are in need of some playdough, paper plates, shoeboxes and old newspapers ready for recyclingPlease send these supplies in as soon as possible. This is a great time for volunteers as well. We would love some additional helping hands from 11:20-12:20. If this is something you are interested in helping with please let me know.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I hope your weekend was relaxing and wonderful!!

Fabulous Fun Friday!!!!!!

Your Kiddos Made It!!!!!!!!

Probably the quickest fun Friday to be earned!! Very, very proud of this bunch!!

That being said, we will be having a Game Day on this coming Friday (1st). I am asking that kiddos bring their favorite board, card games to play during our Fun Friday. I would ask that they not bring any devices for this game day. I would rather us all share and play favorite games from home. Please just make sure that everything has a box and/or bag to contain everything needed for the game.

Please let me know if you have any questions!!

Thank you,

Mrs. Barnes 🙂

Dress Down Day!!!

Happy Mid-Week!!!

As you can see, we did not get our reading logs sent home this week.  I decided against it and everything will start up next Tuesday.

Tomorrow (Wednesday -30th)

We are having a $2.00 Dress Down Day! Please have your kiddo pay their money in the front atrium to receive a stamp for the day! Clothes should still be modest and school appropriate. They must still wear closed toe shoes.  Please let me know if you have any questions!!!

WE MADE IT!!!!!!!

Well the first week is done and over with and we all made it!!! I had so much fun with your kiddos this past week and look forward to the rest of the year! We are going to do great and wonderful things and it will be absolutely amazing! I have a very kind, caring and exciting bunch this year! They are high achieving and bright kiddos with a drive to succeed, which are all qualities that a teacher yearns for in a class. They will only continue to push themselves to do hard things and make the most out of their year.

Thank you so much for allowing me to be their teacher this year! I also cannot begin to even thank you all for the supplies you have donated for us this year!! I was moved to tears while I put it all away, definitely made my teacher heart happy!! Thank you!!!

Just a few things to answer the questions you may have:

1. We will start UnHomework and Spelling on Tuesday, September 5th.

2. I will be sending home a Reading Log this Monday, please just mark the amount of time they read and initial it.  I ask they read at least 80 minutes a week but welcome more! I will be keeping track of minutes read individually and as a class! Please have reading logs filled out nightly and brought back for a minute count every Monday (Tuesday in the case next week).

3. Volunteer times should be posted by the end of this week and I will make sure to share that with you! Thank you all for your willingness to come in and help!

4. I will begin benchmarking for reading this week, so as soon as I get my reading and math levels, I will be able to create groups for friends to work together with the help of parents.

5. I am in the process of working on Prodigy, Zearn, Moby Max and RazKids usernames and passwords.  I am trying to keep them the same as the past, but I may change to make it more uniform as a class, using our first names and our lunch numbers. I will make sure you and your kiddos will know of any changes! Thank you for your patience on this! In the mean time your kiddos may work on any of the activities on my blog.  I would like them to be familiar with navigating my blog and working through the activities on there.

6. Tutoring- I am sure you got the email from Mrs. Tucker regarding the tutoring.  As a 2nd grade, we (Mrs. Ketcham, Mrs. Stott and myself) have decided to run tutoring for our grade and kiddos only. We all have carpool duty on Monday so we will not be running tutoring that day. Tutoring will be on a need basis and will more than likely start after Labor Day and after we have had a chance to benchmark all of our friends.  Tuesdays will be Math tutoring with Mrs. Ketcham, Wednesday will be Reading/Language Arts tutoring with Mrs. Stott and I, Thursday will be a mix of the two.  I will chat with you before if your kiddo would benefit from the tutoring.

Sorry for the long message, I hope you all have the most wonderful weekend!!! See you Monday!!!

Mrs. Barnes 🙂

Welcome Back!!

Dear Parents and Kiddos,

Happy Friday!!

I am so excited to start this new school year with you and your sweet kiddos! Monday the 21st is our Back to School Night. It starts at 5:30 with a meeting in the gym, and then you can make your way to the classrooms to meet teachers and drop off supplies and what not. I would really enjoy the supplies brought that evening rather than the first day, just because I would like the items somewhat put away before we start our day. If you are unable to, that is just fine we will make it all work!

Also, in 2nd grade we won’t be using locks for lockers because of the hassle that comes with them. I have had many tears, cut backpack straps and frustration with them in the past so I have just asked my students not to bring them and everyone goes home with a smile and their backpack intact. 🙂

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

I look forward to meeting all of you on Monday!! It is going to be a great year!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Barnes 🙂

*Please check out the class blog: blogs.ascentutah.org/bbarnes – I have a Getting to Know Mrs. Barnes tab and you can read about my family and I, if you would like! 🙂

SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Screen Shot 2017-06-04 at 11.43.41 AM

Hello,

Well we made it!! We had a great year and learned and laughed lots!  I hope you all have an amazing summer!  Thank you to all of you who showered me with gifts this past week!! We sure are very spoiled and appreciate them all! Thank you!!

Thank you for allowing me to be your kiddo’s teacher this past year, they are absolutely wonderful kiddos and I was very lucky to be their teacher!! They have all grown and learned so much this year and I couldn’t be more proud(and sad) to send them off to 3rd grade.  I, thankfully will get to see most of them daily as their new classrooms share my same hallway!! 🙂

Just a reminder Raz Kids, Moby Max and Zearn are available this summer for your kiddo’s convenience!! They have done really well and I would love them to still practice their math, language arts, and reading skills throughout the summer, just to keep them sharp!! 🙂  My blog is also available all summer as well, there are fun, interactive games/websites that they browse as well, if they need something to do!

Have the best and safest summer!!

Mrs. Barnes 🙂
